Jeggings - hot or not?

When is it ok to wear pants as leggings? Where does ‘you look hot in those skinny jeans’ end and did ‘you get dressed in the dark, you’re missing your pants’ begin? Where is it acceptable to wear leggings as pants? Around the house, the video store, your local Westfield, work?

Now don’t scoff at the last one, thinking surely no one would wear leggings to work. I have seen many a retail chick in various dress shops, sports stores and mobile phone outlets rocking a pair of ‘should be underwear’ leggings as ‘outerwear’ with the company polo. For me this clearly falls into the 'not appropriate' category. You are there to sell the product not to give the customer an eyeful of every inch of your behind. And don’t think I’m over exaggerating, you really can see everything in those leggings, especially the lighter coloured ones. Now I don’t know about you but I don’t really want that much of me on display. It might be ok for a 10 year girl who doesn’t know the meaning of the word puberty but for the rest of the population, it’s an over-share.

So, you say, just stop wearing leggings. This brings us to a problem. I don’t want to stop wearing leggings! They are so comfortable unlike their more acceptable cousin the jean. I always feel so uncomfortable in jeans, not to mention always having to pull them up and looking like a plumbing apprentice when I bend over. My solution… the jegging. Yes I know, I know, jeggings are almost as controversial. But I’m not talking about jean coloured thin leggings here. I’m talking about an actual cross between a jean and legging; lots of stretch to make them comfortable but with zips and pockets to look like ‘real’ pants and a thick enough fabric to conceal what leggings don’t. A proper pair of jeggings actually succeeds in making you look thinner then normal jeans. I have been getting ‘have you lost weight comments’ whenever I wear them and that alone is enough to make me to run out and buy 5 pairs! My magic pair are from Supre for $25 and come in dark blue and black. I’ll be stocking up for sure! Will you?

  1. i am a recent "jeggings" convert and I LOVE THEM!!! mine have pockets and a zipper like real jeans but are as comfy as wearing my trackie dacks around the house!! they can be dressed up or dressed down, long shirt, short shirt you name it !! I used to think these were super uncool and how dare i buy things from supre but how can you argue with such comfort as well as afordablity and style.

  2. Got a really good 'laugh out loud' giggle from the 'plumber's apprentice' bit. Hilarious.
I think all leggings/jeggings should be covered by a 'dress' top. One that covers at least well down the thigh. I have been trying my plus sized ones under long tops, but am still not sure that a plus- sized woman like me can wear them. The jury is still out on that one.

  5. A girl at work wore leggings (read tights) with her work blouse. I did a double take when I saw her bum - I thought she'd forgotten her trousers. An awful look, almost undressed. Thankfully she's no longer there lol.. Great to be reading your blog again Steph, it's been a while :)
